July 1st TOMS RIVER NJ - Almost thirty years ago, a horrific incident took place in Toms River, New Jersey, that shocked the town and eventually became an international story. Now the man responsible for the act, Steven Gorski , finally tells the world what really happened at Saint Joseph's High School in September of 1981.
Steven Gorski is a veteran of the United States Army and lives in New Mexico with his partner, Felix, and their cats Maudy and Augusto. He is studying to be a substance abuse counselor and can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Whelan's brilliance as a story teller is once again on display in Donovan Dumper. The local details, the real characters, and the heart wrenching family struggle make this a must read. When I read Tom's passage that rural Jackson, New Jersey made Bayville, NJ look like Paris I knew he had really done his research. If not for the book title the ending would have been a real shocker. One thing is certain Whelan wipes the record clean on the fantastic rumors that surrounded Steven Gorski's first day of High School. "Robert Elsey"
As a child who grew up in Silverton in the 1970's, and a mom returning to her home town with her own children as an adult, the memories evoked of a simpler, more innocent time were quite sweet. Gorski and Whelan's poignant details of the piece of Toms River surrounded by,then, pine and cedar trees and the brackish Barnegat Bay, accurately depict what our lives were about. Although unaware of "the incident" to this day, a must read for friends who want to remember what our lives and attitudes were in this part of Toms River during that particular time.
