July 1st 2009 - BERKELEY — A 72-year-old resident who disappeared Thursday after telling her husband she was taking a walk on the beach in South Seaside Park has gone missing, said Detective Sgt. James J. Smith.
Julia Madsen, 72, was last seen about 7 p.m. Thursday at her family home on 22nd Avenue in the South Seaside Park, a section of Berkeley Township.
Madsen, who also lives in Clifton, said she was going for a walk on the beach and never returned. Concerned family called police about 8 p.m. to report her missing.
The search continued through the night, Friday, stopping only for the powerful lightning storm that descended on the region , Smith said.
No information is available as to whether Madsen entered the water or if she left on foot or in a vehicle, police said.
Police are continuing to follow any leads generated from requests for information.
Madsen was wearing a pink shirt, white pants and brown leather shoes. She had a silver bracelet on her left wrist and a silver watch on her right wrist.
Madsen has red hair and blue eyes and is 5 foot 6 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds.
The State Police Marine Division, the U.S. Coast Guard provided searches by air and on water. Dozens of fire companies from Ocean County assisted in the search. Members of the Ocean County Sheriffs Criminalistic Investigations Unit and the county prosecutors office also assisted.
